| Surrounding its beautiful harbor, the town of Port Jefferson has grown into one of Long Island's most popular tourist areas. What was once a major shipbuilding port in the late 19th century, Port Jefferson is today a village of picturesque hillside victorian homes. The harbor serves as the town's hub, and accommodates pleasure craft, fishing boats, tall ships, and the Bridgeport Ferry. Located along the harbor's waterfront is the Main street area, famous for its charming shops specializing in antiques, crafts, and book stores. Mixed among the shops you will find many excellent restaurants to satisfy even the most discriminating tastes.
Port Jefferson retains its "small town" intimacy with its top rated school district, and library serving as the community focal points. Residents can enjoy the village owned country club and golf course, as well as two beaches on the Long Island Sound. The Port Jefferson Arts Council frequently sponsors concerts, movie festivals, and art shows. During the summer months the village holds free concerts at the harbor band shell, and sponsors trips on antique sailing vessels. |
